Start of Christmas Season at Huntly Wynd

We came to party hardy in the Clubhouse! And Boy, did we ever! Huntly Wynd residents gathered in the Clubhouse on Friday December 8th to welcome in the holiday season. As Ernie (Unit 87), Albert (Unit 59) and others took command of the microphone in an effort to claim the title of the evening’s “Karaoke Crooner”, conversation, laughter and delicious food was abundant. Jean (Unit 94) and George (Unit 24) flogged 50/50 tickets to give everyone a chance at claiming the evening’s cash prize – the lucky ticket being held by Vivian (Unit 87), congratulations Vivian! Dave (Unit 73) captured many wonderful photographs of enthusiastic partygoers.

What a great cheese and fruit plate!

We also joined together to welcome our newest neighbours Mr. Ricky Shun Yiu Fong, his wife Kathy Yuk Fong Chan and their adult children Derek and Christy (Unit 64). We’re pleased they have chosen Huntly Wynd as their new home and delighted that they bravely plunged right into getting to know their fellow neighbours by joining the party that was already in full swing!

”Social gatherings like this present opportunities for us to connect with friends and neighbours we’ve not seen in a while. It’s an opportunity to catch up on important happenings in their lives or to simply get together and talk with one another”, observed Sue (Unit 13). “We need to have this type of gathering more often!”. Based on the jovial atmosphere, lively conversations and clinking of glasses that lasted all evening, we believe most would heartily agree. What do you think?

Before closing, we extend a seasonal wish to you and yours from Danita and me…

Whether or not you choose to include the observance of Christmas or Hanukkah in your celebrations at this time of year, whether you decorate a tree or light the candles of the menorah — or neither — the forthcoming holiday season is always a time for giving, for fellowship and for family. We’d like to send each of you our personal best wishes for this time, along with the hope that you will have a wonderful holiday and enjoy the spirit of this season.

Have a great holiday, go easy on the rum and eggnog (unless there’s no viable alternative, of course) and we wish you all the very best of all good things for you and yours in the New Year of 2018.

Halloween at “Hauntly Wynd”!

What a fun Halloween gathering filled with imagination and creativity by all those who attended! We’re not exactly sure which Huntly Wynd residents were actually there, but there were some interesting partygoers like… Elmer Fudd with his gun (yikes), a Rasta couple from Jamaica, a professional cricket player, a Mexican lady dressed in traditional clothing, a heavy metal punk rocker, a witch (of course) and, of all things, a rain cloud!

In what turned out to be a very tight race, a panel of judges presented awards in three categories:

Anca (Unit 20) captured “Best Costume” (black cat)

Danita (Unit 75) was judged the “Scariest Costume” (rain cloud)

Jean (Unit 94) took “Cutest Costume” (Rasta man with dreadlocks)

Thanks to Jean (Unit 94) for coming up with the idea of a Halloween social, and the whole team of residents who helped make the party happen:

Daniel (Unit 49) who translated the invitations into Chinese.

Ernie (Unit 87) who provided the music.

Renee (Unit 94), Jean (Unit 93), Ray (Unit 71), April and Craig (Unit 92), Wayne and Carol (Unit 82) and Don (Unit 98) – who set up, decorated and cleaned up the aftermath!

What’s next? A Christmas/Hanukkah celebration, of course, planned for December 8th in the Hauntly…I mean, Huntly Wynd Clubhouse! Save the date and keep your eyes and ears open for the invitation and further details!

Huntly Wynd Celebrates its 40th Anniversary

An unprecedented number of residents attended this exciting, milestone community event and saw Estelle Caplan – wife of the late Huntly Wynd developer Jack Caplan – join long-time resident Joan (Unit 85) in marking our development’s 40th anniversary by cutting the delicious anniversary cake!

Estelle & Joan Cutting Cake

The cake cutting ceremony was one of many memorable events of the July 8th landmark celebration. More than eighty Huntly Wynd residents came together to celebrate an afternoon/evening of Huntly Wynd memories. The camaraderie, lively conversation and laughter was enjoyed by all as mouth watering aromas wafted around us from several barbecues.

Following a welcome to all delivered by Strata President Louise (Unit 11), Henry (Unit 15) provided some historical tidbits of Huntly Wynd’s past.

Welcome from Louise

Fred (Unit 6) took top honours in the Huntly Wynd trivia quiz created by Joan (Unit 85) and her family. For that, we thank Joan for this creative idea and for donating the beautiful gift basket for the winner. Perhaps you would like to test your own knowledge of Huntly Wynd trivia with this short quiz:

  1. In what year was the clubhouse billiard table made?
  2. On the day of Huntly Wynd’s official opening, how many townhouse units had already been sold?
  3. Huntly Wynd’s developer Jack Caplan was a chain smoker of what brand of cigarettes?
  4. From what location in BC were the rocks that make up the clubhouse fireplace façade trucked in from?
  5. Name the three different townhouse floor plans used in Huntly Wynd.

If you’re stumped, answers to all these questions can be found by reading the September 1977 BC Business magazine article.

The ad-hoc organizing committee was delighted to see such a positive turnout. The only two complaints, stated by many were that the celebration seemed to end too soon (although conversation did not end until 2:00AM the next morning). Others said that we don’t hold social gatherings like this one often enough. As a community, we’ll all have to come together and work on changing that! The photos below attest to the good time had by all and will likely have you looking forward to the next social gathering.

Sincere appreciation goes to all members of the organizing committee who teamed up to coordinate barbecue donations, purchase decorations, order the anniversary cake, deliver invitations, collect RSVPs and arrange for Estelle Caplan’s participation. Committee members included Henry and Angeline (Unit 15), Robert and Lesley (Unit 26), d’Arcy (Unit 55), Ken and Sue (Unit 13), Trudy (Unit 21), Louise (Unit 11) and Danita and Rob (Unit 75).
